Used 7.3 Power Stroke (1994.5-2003): what to check before you buy

The 12 documented failures of this engine, laid out in the order you inspect a truck: paperwork and VIN, a cold start, a code scan, under the hood, the test drive and a look after it. Each line is the sign as our record describes it, linked to the full failure page. At the end: what each repair costs.

1Before you go

Run the VIN and ask for the paperwork on the campaigns below: a done recall or program is a solved problem, an open one is a free repair the seller has not had done.

2Cold start and idle

Ask the seller not to start or warm the engine before you arrive. Most of these only show on a cold engine; then let it idle and listen.

3Scan for codes

A basic OBD-II reader shows stored and pending codes; on a diesel ask a shop for a full scan if you can. These are the codes our records tie to known failures on this engine.

CodesPoints to
P0340CPS (camshaft position sensor) failure
P1211High-pressure oil pump wear / low ICP

What a code means on each engine: trouble codes by engine.

4Hood up and underneath

Engine off, in daylight, with a flashlight.

  • Injector o-ring failure
    • oil consumption with no external leak

To confirm: blue smoke at cold start that clears = upper injector o-rings (classic signature)

  • Turbo pedestal o-ring leaks
    • oil pooling in the engine valley / around the turbo pedestal
    • oil traces in the intercooler boots and charge pipes

To confirm: degrease the valley, run, re-inspect: fresh oil at the pedestal base = o-rings

  • Water pump wear
    • coolant weep at the weep hole / front cover
    • slow coolant loss with no other symptoms

To confirm: UV-dye or clean-and-observe the weep hole

5Test drive

At least 20 minutes, including a highway run and a hill or a load if you can.

6After the drive

Hot engine, parked: the dipstick and the coolant reservoir tell you what the drive did. Then shut it off and restart it hot: some failures only show on a hot restart.

  • High-pressure oil pump wear / low ICP
    • no-start or long crank HOT, starts fine cold (oil thins)

To confirm: hot no-start: compare ICP actual vs desired and IPR duty (high duty + low ICP = pump or leak)

  • Injector o-ring failure
    • high-pressure-oil symptoms if the lower o-rings leak (hard start hot)

To confirm: blue smoke at cold start that clears = upper injector o-rings (classic signature)

  • IPR valve failure / o-ring degradation
    • no-start or rough hot running; IPR duty pegged high

To confirm: scan IPR duty vs ICP actual (high duty, low pressure = IPR circuit or pump)

What it costs if you find it

Parts budgets from our repair recipes for this engine: Dave's Auto Center's prices where Dave's lists the part, approximate OEM and maker catalog prices (rounded) for the rest; labor not included. A campaign listed next to a failure may make the repair free on a covered truck: check it by VIN.

This is a list of documented failures to check, not an inspection: a pre-purchase inspection by a diesel shop sees what we cannot. Years show where a failure covers only part of the engine's run.
