Recipe - Ford 7.3L Power Stroke Diesel (T444E)
Specific Fix build
Reliability tier: aggregated - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/
HEUI oil-side diagnosis and repair (modes High-pressure oil pump wear / low ICP / IPR valve failure / o-ring degradation / Injector o-ring failure): hard or no-start HOT with ok cranking speed is a high-pressure-oil story. Work cheap-to-expensive: injector o-rings and the IPR (with its screen) before the HPOP itself; the pump is the last suspect, not the first.
Parts
- 7.3L Power Stroke HEUI Injector Seal Kit (aftermarket) - hardened o-rings leak injection oil - smoke at startup points here first (qty 1)
- 7.3L Power Stroke IPR Valve (OEM) - IPR with hardened o-rings / clogged screen mimics pump death; rule it in/out early (qty 1)
- 7.3L Power Stroke High-Pressure Oil Pump 1994-early 1999 (15 deg) - 15-degree swash-plate pump for OBS-era trucks if the pump itself is worn (qty 1)
- 7.3L Power Stroke High-Pressure Oil Pump late 1999-2003 (17 deg) - 17-degree pump for 1999+ Super Duty trucks (qty 1)
Install order
- gauge ICP at crank vs spec; hot-vs-cold behavior tells oil dilution/thickness from real wear
- renew injector o-rings where smoke/leak signs point; cheapest fix with real hit rate
- replace the IPR (inspect its screen for debris - metal there means pump wear)
- only then the HPOP itself, era-correct: OBS 15-degree vs 99+ 17-degree
Expected outcome
Hot starts return to spec; ICP reaches injection threshold.
Do not
- do not replace the HPOP on first failure evidence without testing the IPR and o-rings - the pump is the expensive end of the same story
Parts budget
About $10-$630 in parts. It depends on what the diagnosis finds; each option below is what you buy together. Prices marked "at Dave's" are Dave's Auto Center's, the same as in his store; the others are approximate prices from OEM and maker catalogs, rounded (a manufacturer's list price can run higher). Parts only, no labor.
DIY or shop: DIY-leaning for o-rings and IPR; HPOP is a longer reach-in but DIY-doable.
