Used 3.2 Power Stroke (Transit): what to check before you buy
The 10 documented failures of this engine, laid out in the order you inspect a truck: paperwork and VIN, a cold start, a code scan, under the hood, the test drive and a look after it. Each line is the sign as our record describes it, linked to the full failure page. At the end: what each repair costs.
1Before you go
Run the VIN and ask for the paperwork on the campaigns below: a done recall or program is a solved problem, an open one is a free repair the seller has not had done.
- Run the VIN
It confirms the engine and lists the campaigns for that model year. Whether a recall is still open on this VIN: nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- Safety recalls on this engine
- 16V-618 · 2015-2016 · Fuel system, diesel
- Programs, extended coverages and emissions recalls
Plus 6 service bulletins on the recalls page.
2Cold start and idle
Ask the seller not to start or warm the engine before you arrive. Most of these only show on a cold engine; then let it idle and listen.
- EGR cooler failure: overheating and coolant loss (three Ford field actions)
- white smoke / coolant in the exhaust on advanced cases
- Common-rail injectors / injection pump faults
- hard start or extended crank
- Glow plug / cold-start no-start
- no-start or extended crank, worse cold
4Hood up and underneath
Engine off, in daylight, with a flashlight.
- EGR cooler failure: overheating and coolant loss (three Ford field actions)
- coolant loss without an external leak (cooler leaks internally)
To confirm: check for unexplained coolant loss and pressure-test with the EGR circuit in mind
- Coolant loss without an external leak (overheat)
- recurring low coolant in the degas bottle
- coolant odor / traces at the EGR or oil cooler area
To confirm: pressure-test cold and hot; inspect the EGR cooler and oil cooler before condemning external hardware
- Engine oil leaks / crankcase ventilation hose
- engine oil leak traces on the front/side of the engine
- low oil level between services
To confirm: degrease and re-inspect to find the true source (valve cover, vent hose, front seals)
- Turbo / VGT faults (oil in exhaust after turbo)
- oil traces in the exhaust downstream of the turbo
To confirm: log boost desired-vs-actual; check the actuator and vane movement
5Test drive
At least 20 minutes, including a highway run and a hill or a load if you can.
- EGR cooler failure: overheating and coolant loss (three Ford field actions)
- engine overheating with no obvious cause
- DPF / DEF-SCR aftertreatment messages and service ('Drive To Clean')
- 'Drive To Clean' maintenance message on the dash
- DEF distance-to-empty warnings and refills ahead of schedule
- reduced engine power from aftertreatment DTCs
- frequent / long regeneration cycles on short-trip duty
- Fuel filter / water-in-fuel service and cold-weather power loss
- loss of power in extreme cold
- Coolant loss without an external leak (overheat)
- overheating with no visible external leak
- Common-rail injectors / injection pump faults
- rough running / misfire-style shake on a diesel (cylinder imbalance)
- Glow plug / cold-start no-start
- stall-after-start on cold mornings
- Turbo / VGT faults (oil in exhaust after turbo)
- underboost / reduced power DTCs
- whistle or bearing noise
6After the drive
Hot engine, parked: the dipstick and the coolant reservoir tell you what the drive did. Then shut it off and restart it hot: some failures only show on a hot restart.
- Common-rail injectors / injection pump faults
- fuel dilution of the oil over time
To confirm: cylinder-balance test / injector buzz test per the service procedure

Built from the failure-mode records, recalls registry and repair recipes on this site; every line links to its source page with tiers and sources. This is a list of documented failures to check, not an inspection: a pre-purchase inspection by a diesel shop sees what we cannot. Years show where a failure covers only part of the engine's run.
