Failure mode - Ford 3.2L Power Stroke Diesel (Transit 2015-2019)
DPF / DEF-SCR aftertreatment messages and service ('Drive To Clean')
Reliability tier: aggregated - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/
Symptoms
- 'Drive To Clean' maintenance message on the dash
- DEF distance-to-empty warnings and refills ahead of schedule
- reduced engine power from aftertreatment DTCs
- frequent / long regeneration cycles on short-trip duty
Compare with the other causes of the same sign on this engine: loss of power, limp mode or derate (3 causes) · def, dpf and regeneration warnings
Root cause
The Bosch DPF + Denoxtronic SCR system on a short-trip work van regenerates often and asks for driver cooperation: Ford issued 'Drive To Clean' maintenance-message TSBs (18-2189, 18-2223) and a run of DEF/DTE informational SSMs (46093, 46066, 46890, 47039, 47110). Service content only - the system is repaired, never defeated.
Diagnosis
- read aftertreatment DTCs and soot/DEF level PIDs; check for active or pending regenerations
- verify DEF quality and level sensor behavior before replacing hardware
- on repeated short trips: explain the duty-cycle reality and complete a stationary/road regeneration per the service procedure
- rule out upstream causes (EGR cooler leaks load the DPF) before condemning aftertreatment parts
Fixes
aftertreatment service per procedure: regeneration, DEF system service, sensor replacement where DTCs point at hardware; never delete ()
