Failure mode - Ford 3.2L Power Stroke Diesel (Transit 2015-2019)
Fuel filter / water-in-fuel service and cold-weather power loss
Reliability tier: aggregated - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/
Symptoms
- loss of power in extreme cold
- water-in-fuel indications
- restricted filter after marginal fuel
Compare with the other causes of the same sign on this engine: loss of power, limp mode or derate (3 causes)
Root cause
The 3.2's fuel system is filter-sensitive: Ford issued a fuel-filter service-tip SSM (45872) and a cold-weather power-loss SSM (48601, MY2015-2019, extreme cold conditions). Marginal fuel and short trips make this the most common service stop.
Diagnosis
- check the filter restriction and water-in-fuel indication first on any power-loss complaint
- verify fuel quality/season blend in cold weather
- log rail pressure to separate supply-side from injector-side faults
Fixes
fuel filter / water-separator service per the SSM tip; proper winter blend ()
