Failure mode - Ford 3.2L Power Stroke Diesel (Transit 2015-2019)
Turbo / VGT faults (oil in exhaust after turbo)
Reliability tier: aggregated - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/
Symptoms
- oil traces in the exhaust downstream of the turbo
- underboost / reduced power DTCs
- whistle or bearing noise
Compare with the other causes of the same sign on this engine: loss of power, limp mode or derate (3 causes) · oil leak, oil consumption or rising oil level (3 causes) · ticking, knocking, rattle or whine
Root cause
Single VGT turbo; oil migration past the seals shows up in the exhaust (Ford SSM 49805 covers oil in the exhaust after turbocharger replacement across diesel applications). Actuator/boost-control faults match the broader diesel pattern.
Diagnosis
- log boost desired-vs-actual; check the actuator and vane movement
- inspect shaft play and the oil drain path
- rule out charge-path leaks before turbo replacement
Fixes
turbocharger replacement with oil-supply/drain correction; actuator where the control fault is isolated ()
Prevalence
