Recipe - Ford 6.0L Power Stroke
Bulletproof Budget build
Reliability tier: aggregated - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/
The classic emissions-legal 6.0 bulletproof at stock power, using OEM-style coolers. Fixes the cooling-failure cascade (coolant -> oil cooler -> EGR cooler -> overheat -> head gaskets) at its source. Head studs are NOT included here - only add them if the truck has already lifted heads or you are adding power (see premium / mild-power).
Parts
- 6.0L Power Stroke Engine Oil Cooler (valley, oil-to-coolant) - the clog point that starts the cascade; replace and flush (qty 1)
- 6.0L Power Stroke Oil Cooler Gasket / O-Ring Kit - single-use seals (qty 1)
- 6.0L Power Stroke EGR Cooler, OEM-style replacement - replace with the latest revised OEM design; a new oil cooler protects it (qty 1)
- 6.0L Power Stroke EGR Cooler Install Kit (gaskets, o-rings, hardware) - single-use seals/hardware (qty 1)
- 6.0L Power Stroke EGR Valve - clean or replace while the EGR system is apart (qty 1)
- 6.0L Power Stroke Coolant Filtration Kit (spin-on) - keeps the clean system clean - non-negotiable for a lasting result (qty 1)
- Ford Specification Gold HOAT Coolant (6.0L Power Stroke) - full refill (qty 1)
- 6.0L Power Stroke Water Pump - already in there; wear item (qty 1)
- 6.0L Power Stroke Thermostat - with the water pump (qty 1)
- 6.0L Power Stroke Degas Bottle (coolant reservoir) - cheap, cracks with age, in the work area (qty 1)
- 6.0L Power Stroke Degas Bottle Pressure Cap - with the bottle (qty 1)
- 6.0L Power Stroke STC Fitting Update Kit (high-pressure oil rail) - 2004.5+; do it while the truck is apart (qty 1)
- 6.0L Power Stroke Standpipe & Dummy Plug O-Ring Kit - with the STC fitting (qty 1)
Install order
- cooling system flush; remove and replace the engine oil cooler
- replace EGR cooler (and valve if chosen)
- water pump, thermostat, degas bottle + cap
- install coolant filter; refill with fresh HOAT coolant; bleed thoroughly
- STC fitting + standpipe o-rings if 2004.5+
Expected outcome
Ends the cooling-failure cascade for a stock-power street/tow truck, emissions-legal. Head gaskets remain on factory bolts - fine if never overheated and staying stock.
Do not
- do not replace the EGR cooler without the oil cooler - the single most common wasted repair on a 6.0
- do not reuse coolant - flush and refill
- do not add power on this recipe without moving to head studs
- do not fit an SCA coolant filter element with gold HOAT coolant
Estimated cost: $2000-$4000 parts; shop labor typically similar again (rough) · Shop job for most owners - the oil cooler is deep in the valley and the coolant work is fiddly. A confident DIYer with a weekend and a lift can do it.
