Used Duramax L5P (2017-present): what to check before you buy
The 10 documented failures of this engine, laid out in the order you inspect a truck: paperwork and VIN, a cold start, a code scan, under the hood, the test drive and a look after it. Each line is the sign as our record describes it, linked to the full failure page. At the end: what each repair costs.
1Before you go
Run the VIN and ask for the paperwork on the campaigns below: a done recall or program is a solved problem, an open one is a free repair the seller has not had done.
- Run the VIN
It confirms the engine and lists the campaigns for that model year. Whether a recall is still open on this VIN: nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- Safety recalls on this engine
2Cold start and idle
Ask the seller not to start or warm the engine before you arrive. Most of these only show on a cold engine; then let it idle and listen.
- EGR carbon buildup (valve and intake deposits)
- gradual rough idle / drivability degradation over high mileage rather than sudden failure
- Glow plug failures - fragile ceramic tips (R&R hazard)
- extended cranking / rough cold idle on cold mornings
- Injector wear / pigtail-connector misfires
- rough idle, hard starting, poor fuel economy, excessive exhaust smoke (a parts retailer's symptom table)
3Scan for codes
A basic OBD-II reader shows stored and pending codes; on a diesel ask a shop for a full scan if you can. These are the codes our records tie to known failures on this engine.
| Codes | Points to |
|---|---|
| P203E, P2047, P208E, P20B9 | DEF system failures: tank heater, dosing, quality (L5P) |
| P2452-P2455 | DPF ash loading / excessive regeneration + differential pressure sensor |
| P2200, P2201, P229E, P229F | NOx sensor drift/failure (SCR efficiency codes) |
| P129F | In-tank lift pump / low-pressure fuel delivery stalls |
What a code means on each engine: trouble codes by engine.
4Hood up and underneath
Engine off, in daylight, with a flashlight.
- DEF system failures: tank heater, dosing, quality (L5P)
- crystallized DEF at the doser; heater circuit faults in cold weather
To confirm: read the specific DEF DTC family (P203E/P2047/P208E/P20B9 reported on L5P) and test the heater circuit for an open before replacing the tank
- Cooling system wear: water pump, hoses, thermostat (towing duty)
- coolant seep/leak from the water pump weep hole; soft hoses; temperature creep under sustained tow
To confirm: pressure-test the cooling system; inspect the water pump weep hole, hoses and thermostat at service intervals
5Test drive
At least 20 minutes, including a highway run and a hill or a load if you can.
- DEF system failures: tank heater, dosing, quality (L5P)
- 'Service DEF System - See Dealer' with a countdown to a speed-limited mode (e.g. 55 mph after N miles)
- repeated DEF-related codes; on the VOQ record the tank heater short melted the wiring harness and forced limp mode
- DPF ash loading / excessive regeneration + differential pressure sensor
- regen intervals collapsing from a healthy 400-700 miles to 50-100 miles, with fuel economy dropping to 10-12 mpg highway and constant 'Cleaning Exhaust Filter' messages
- 'Service Exhaust System' messages and false regen triggers from the differential pressure sensor (codes P2452-P2455)
- high EGTs on grades, creeping coolant temps and lost power under tow when the filter restricts
- NOx sensor drift/failure (SCR efficiency codes)
- check-engine light with SCR/NOx efficiency codes ('service emissions system')
- downstream NOx reading drifting toward the upstream value (a healthy SCR shows roughly a 70-90% reduction)
- VGT turbo electronic actuator failure (BorgWarner)
- check-engine light with 'Reduced Power' from the turbo/boost side (an NHTSA complaint names a dealer turbo-actuator replacement on a 2020 Sierra 2500)
- reduced power or unusual turbo noise; vanes sticking at high mileage
- Fuel contamination damage to the HP4/injector system (no CP4 on the L5P)
- after a bad-tank event: sudden rough running, metal contamination through the high-pressure circuit, six-figure repair quotes at the dealer
- In-tank lift pump / low-pressure fuel delivery stalls
- random loss of motive power / stalling at speed with no warning light (NHTSA VOQ 'FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL' records)
- Injector wear / pigtail-connector misfires
- misfires traced to injector pigtail/connector faults rather than the injector body (community)
What it costs if you find it
Parts budgets from our repair recipes for this engine: Dave's Auto Center's prices where Dave's lists the part, approximate OEM and maker catalog prices (rounded) for the rest; labor not included. A campaign listed next to a failure may make the repair free on a covered truck: check it by VIN.
| Failure | Years | Repair budget | May be covered by |
|---|---|---|---|
| DEF system failures: tank heater, dosing, quality (L5P) | all | about $70-$370 in parts | - |
| VGT turbo electronic actuator failure (BorgWarner) | all | about $760-$1,700 in parts | - |

Built from the failure-mode records, recalls registry and repair recipes on this site; every line links to its source page with tiers and sources. This is a list of documented failures to check, not an inspection: a pre-purchase inspection by a diesel shop sees what we cannot. Years show where a failure covers only part of the engine's run.
