Failure mode - Duramax 6.6L V8 Turbo Diesel (GM HD, L5P 2017+ generation)

VGT turbo electronic actuator failure (BorgWarner)

Reliability tier: verified - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/

Symptoms

Compare with the other causes of the same sign on this engine: loss of power, limp mode or derate (4 causes) · ticking, knocking, rattle or whine

Root cause

The L5P carries a BorgWarner variable-geometry turbo; the electronic actuator is the most common failure point on the assembly, with boost leaks and high-mileage vane wear less common. Vendor framing treats the turbo as a wear item in the 150k-250k mile range.

Diagnosis

Fixes

replace the VGT actuator when the turbo core is healthy; replace the turbo-set when vanes/bearings are worn ()
