Duramax L5P (2017-present): loss of power, limp mode or derate
4 documented failures on this engine list this among their signs. They are ordered from the most widespread down. Each one shows the signs in its record's own words, how to tell it from the others, the usual fix and any recall or bulletin.
Not sure which engine you have, or want the recalls for your exact truck? Check your VIN: it names the engine and lists the campaigns for that model year. Whether a recall is still open on your VIN: nhtsa.gov/recalls.

How widespread: Common
How it shows up
- 'Service DEF System - See Dealer' with a countdown to a speed-limited mode (e.g. 55 mph after N miles)
- repeated DEF-related codes; on the VOQ record the tank heater short melted the wiring harness and forced limp mode
Its other signs
- crystallized DEF at the doser; heater circuit faults in cold weather
How to tell it apart
- read the specific DEF DTC family (P203E/P2047/P208E/P20B9 reported on L5P) and test the heater circuit for an open before replacing the tank
- bidirectional DEF dosing test: pump should build roughly 70-130 psi; check for crystallization at the doser
- top up with fresh API-certified DEF and rule out quality before hardware
Usual fix
replace the failed DEF heater/tank assembly or dosing components; use certified DEF fluid

How widespread: Common
How it shows up
- high EGTs on grades, creeping coolant temps and lost power under tow when the filter restricts
Its other signs
- regen intervals collapsing from a healthy 400-700 miles to 50-100 miles, with fuel economy dropping to 10-12 mpg highway and constant 'Cleaning Exhaust Filter' messages
- 'Service Exhaust System' messages and false regen triggers from the differential pressure sensor (codes P2452-P2455)
How to tell it apart
- track regen intervals over three tanks: under ~200 miles average at 80k+ miles indicates an ash-loaded DPF
- differential pressure diagnostics: above ~0.5 psi at warm idle or ~3.0 psi at wide-open throttle under load indicates restriction; pressure should read near zero at key-on/engine-off; replace sensor and hose as a pair
- distinguish sensor-fault codes from a genuinely loaded filter before buying hardware
Usual fix
replace the differential pressure sensor + hose when codes are sensor-side; replace or professionally clean the DPF assembly when genuinely ash-loaded

How widespread: Common
How it shows up
- check-engine light with 'Reduced Power' from the turbo/boost side (an NHTSA complaint names a dealer turbo-actuator replacement on a 2020 Sierra 2500)
- reduced power or unusual turbo noise; vanes sticking at high mileage
How to tell it apart
- rule out the electronic actuator first (codes/vane position), then check for boost leaks and vane wear
- listen for abnormal turbo noise at steady speed - a stall/noise complaint pair exists in VOQ for this platform
Usual fix
replace the VGT actuator when the turbo core is healthy; replace the turbo-set when vanes/bearings are worn

aggregated
How widespread: Occasional
How it shows up
- random loss of motive power / stalling at speed with no warning light (NHTSA VOQ 'FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL' records)
Its other signs
- fuel pump control module fault codes reported (one owner: P129F)
How to tell it apart
- log low-pressure fuel supply during a stall event; distinguish electrical (driver/harness) from pump wear
- check for stored fuel-pump control DTCs (e.g. P129F reported by an owner)
Usual fix
replace the in-tank lift pump module or the failed control/driver side; aftermarket external lift pumps are an upgrade path
