Failure mode - Duramax 6.6L V8 Turbo Diesel (GM HD, L5P 2017+ generation)
DEF system failures: tank heater, dosing, quality (L5P)
Reliability tier: verified - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/
Symptoms
- 'Service DEF System - See Dealer' with a countdown to a speed-limited mode (e.g. 55 mph after N miles)
- repeated DEF-related codes; on the VOQ record the tank heater short melted the wiring harness and forced limp mode
- crystallized DEF at the doser; heater circuit faults in cold weather
Compare with the other causes of the same sign on this engine: loss of power, limp mode or derate (4 causes) · def, dpf and regeneration warnings (3 causes)
Root cause
The DEF subsystem (tank heater element, level/quality sensors, dosing pump and injector) fails ahead of the engine: heater elements short or open, tanks/harnesses are replaced as assemblies, and poor-quality or contaminated DEF crystallizes the doser. NHTSA complaints repeatedly name the tank heater and tank-assembly replacements at low mileage (one owner: heater at 24k and again at 47k).
Diagnosis
- read the specific DEF DTC family (P203E/P2047/P208E/P20B9 reported on L5P) and test the heater circuit for an open before replacing the tank
- bidirectional DEF dosing test: pump should build roughly 70-130 psi; check for crystallization at the doser
- top up with fresh API-certified DEF and rule out quality before hardware
Fixes
replace the failed DEF heater/tank assembly or dosing components; use certified DEF fluid ()
- def-injector - more than one option: Duramax L5P DEF Dosing Injector, pre-2021 doser (2017-2021) (OEM), Duramax L5P DEF Doser Injector 2021-2024 (OEM)
- Duramax L5P DEF Tank Assembly (OEM)
- Duramax L5P DEF Controller (OEM)
- Duramax L5P DEF Tank Harness 2020-2022 (OEM)
- DEF refill - fresh API-certified fluid (service item, all L5P)
