Recipe - Duramax 6.6L V8 Turbo Diesel (GM HD, L5P 2017+ generation)
Specific Fix build
Reliability tier: aggregated - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/
L5P VGT turbo repair (mode VGT turbo electronic actuator failure (BorgWarner)): the BorgWarner actuator is the most common failure point on the assembly - boost leaks, limp modes and vaned-nozzle position faults. Diagnose actuator-vs-CHRA first: the actuator PN 12723081 is a fraction of the full turbo 12723083, and wrong-pump returns are the money pit here.
Parts
- Duramax L5P VGT Turbo Actuator (OEM) - the electronic actuator (12723081) - the statistically likely repair (qty 1)
- Duramax L5P Turbocharger 2020-2023 (OEM) - full turbo assembly (12723083) when the CHRA/wheels are worn, not just the actuator (qty 1)
Install order
- separate the fault: actuator sweep/position codes vs oil presence and wheel-damage signs
- actuator-only replacement where diagnosis supports it
- full assembly for CHRA wear or wheel damage; check oil-side root causes while in there
Expected outcome
Boost and vane control back to spec, no limp events.
Do not
- do not buy a full turbo because the actuator threw a code - test the actuator first, it is the majority case
Parts budget
About $760-$1,700 in parts. It depends on what the diagnosis finds; each option below is what you buy together. Prices marked "at Dave's" are Dave's Auto Center's, the same as in his store; the others are approximate prices from OEM and maker catalogs, rounded (a manufacturer's list price can run higher). Parts only, no labor.
