7.3 Power Stroke (1994.5-2003): ticking, knocking, rattle or whine

3 documented failures on this engine list this among their signs. They are ordered from the most widespread down. Each one shows the signs in its record's own words, how to tell it from the others, the usual fix and any recall or bulletin.

  1. Water pump wear Common · 2 complaints
  2. Turbo up-pipe / donut gasket leaks Common
  3. EBPV stuck (exhaust backpressure valve) Occasional

Not sure which engine you have, or want the recalls for your exact truck? Check your VIN: it names the engine and lists the campaigns for that model year. Whether a recall is still open on your VIN: nhtsa.gov/recalls.

verified How widespread: Common 2 NHTSA owner complaints match it, out of 667 checked

How it shows up

  • bearing growl from the front; wobble at the fan
Its other signs
  • coolant weep at the weep hole / front cover
  • slow coolant loss with no other symptoms

How to tell it apart

  • UV-dye or clean-and-observe the weep hole
  • feel for pulley play at services

Usual fix

replace the water pump; refresh the coolant and inspect hoses while open

aggregated How widespread: Common

How it shows up

  • soot traces at the up-pipe donuts / back of the engine; chirping or hissing under load
Its other signs
  • low boost, sluggish; EGTs higher than boost implies
  • oil-free exhaust leak sound when cold

How to tell it apart

  • look for fresh soot at the up-pipe/turbo flange joints
  • compare commanded/actual boost under load; a boost deficit with no visible boot leak points inside
  • listen for the chirp under load (distinct from the EBPV's cold whistle)

Usual fix

up-pipe kit with new donut gaskets (bellowed stainless upgrade designs exist - permanent fix)

aggregated How widespread: Occasional

How it shows up

  • loud jet-engine / whooshing exhaust noise (stuck CLOSED)
Its other signs
  • power loss until warm; exhaust restriction feel
  • valve actuator rod oily/frozen on inspection

How to tell it apart

  • cold-start listen: the noise + no power = EBPV closed when it shouldn't stay closed
  • check the actuator rod moves freely (oily rod freezes the lever)
  • unplug the actuator as a road test - noise gone = confirmed

Usual fix

clean/free the actuator rod and bushing (cheap first fix)

Order: how widespread each failure is in its record (near-universal, very common, common, occasional, rare), then the number of NHTSA owner complaints that match its keywords. Complaint counts are keyword matches, not a manual review of each complaint. A symptom listed here means the failure is documented with that sign; it is not a diagnosis of your truck.
