Failure mode - Ford 6.7L Power Stroke Diesel (Scorpion)

Piezo injector wear and fuel dilution of engine oil

Reliability tier: verified - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/

Symptoms

Compare with the other causes of the same sign on this engine: hard start, long crank or no-start (4 causes) · white smoke from the exhaust (3 causes) · black smoke or smoke under load · oil leak, oil consumption or rising oil level (2 causes) · misfire, rough idle, hesitation or surging (5 causes)

Root cause

The piezoelectric injectors use a stack of crystal wafers that expand when energized, delivering up to five injection events per cycle with microsecond timing - precise, but intolerant of contaminated or poor-quality fuel, and they wear measurably with miles. Normal wear shows up as nozzle erosion and internal leakage skewing cylinder-to-cylinder fuel delivery; the PCM compensates silently via cylinder-balance corrections for a long time, so wear rarely announces itself until well advanced. A CONTAMINATION event (failing CP4 - CP4.2 high-pressure fuel pump contamination cascade, water, debris) accelerates the process dramatically and usually takes out multiple injectors at once - a categorically different, faster failure than routine wear. Fuel dilution of the oil has two distinct sources that get conflated by owners: late post-injections during normal DPF regeneration wash a small, by-design amount of fuel past the rings (why oil life shortens on trucks that regenerate often - see DPF clogging / regeneration problems), while a genuinely leaking injector adds fuel far faster, thinning oil until bearing protection suffers.

Diagnosis

Fixes

replace failed injectors in matched sets, not individually - pairing one new injector with seven worn ones causes balance complaints and repeat labor ()

if injectors failed from pump debris (not routine wear), the correct repair is a full contamination kit, not a stand-alone injector swap - see CP4.2 high-pressure fuel pump contamination cascade ()
