Failure mode - Ford 6.7L Power Stroke Diesel (Scorpion)

DPF clogging / regeneration problems

Reliability tier: verified - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/

Symptoms

Compare with the other causes of the same sign on this engine: loss of power, limp mode or derate (5 causes) · def, dpf and regeneration warnings (2 causes)

Root cause

The DPF traps soot continuously; the PCM clears it via passive regeneration during sustained highway load or active regeneration (late injections deliberately raise exhaust temperature). Trucks that only see short trips or heavy idle time do not get hot enough, often enough, to complete a full regen, leading to progressive clogging. Ash - the incombustible residue of burned soot and oil additives - accumulates permanently regardless of driving pattern and is why high-mileage DPFs eventually need professional cleaning or replacement even on a healthy engine. EGR-side problems (EGR valve soot clogging / sticking stuck open) load the DPF faster by raising soot production, so a truck regenerating unusually often is not automatically a DPF-only problem.

Diagnosis

Fixes

professional DPF cleaning for ash-loaded but structurally sound filters ()

DPF replacement when cleaning is insufficient or the substrate is cracked/restricted beyond service ()

address upstream causes (EGR health, differential-pressure sensor, driving-pattern coaching) rather than treating frequent regens as a DPF-only problem ()

Prevalence
