Failure mode - Ford 3.5L EcoBoost Gasoline (F-150, Expedition, Transit, Raptor - 2011-present)
Low-pressure fuel delivery (in-tank pump / pressure faults)
Reliability tier: aggregated - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/
Symptoms
- no-start / extended crank, more pronounced cold
- power loss under load from fuel starvation
- MIL with P0087-family codes
Compare with the other causes of the same sign on this engine: hard start, long crank or no-start (5 causes) · loss of power, limp mode or derate (5 causes)
Root cause
In-tank pump and delivery-side faults (pump wear, pressure regulation, wiring) starve the HPFP; Ford also issued a Gen1 cold-weather no-start/hard-start bulletin below -15C for MY2011-2014 trucks.
Diagnosis
- log low-side fuel pressure at rail inlet, cold and hot
- verify pump power/ground and the filter state before pump replacement
- apply the cold-weather bulletin triage below -15C before parts
Fixes
in-tank pump module / filter service; wiring correction where the fault is electrical ()
- fuel-pump - more than one option: 3.5L EcoBoost In-Tank Fuel Pump Module, Gen1 (Ford CL3Z-9H307-A 2WD / DL3Z-9H307-A 4WD), 3.5L EcoBoost In-Tank Fuel Pump Module, Gen2 (Ford HL3Z-9H307-E, supersedes -A)
- In-tank fuel filter service (integral to the pump module, all 3.5L EcoBoost applications)
- fuel-delivery - more than one option: 3.5L EcoBoost Fuel Pump Controller (Ford HL3Z-9D370-B, 2017-2021 F-150 / Expedition / Navigator), 3.5L EcoBoost Fuel Pump Control Unit, wiring-correction part (Ford GA8Z-9D370-A)
