Failure mode - Ford 6.0L Power Stroke
VGT turbocharger sticking
Reliability tier: verified - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/
Symptoms
- low power / sluggish spool-up
- surging or hunting boost
- overboost or underboost fault codes (P0299, P2262, P2263); occasional limp mode
- loud exhaust 'bark' / sneeze; weak exhaust brake
Root cause
The variable geometry turbo's unison ring and vanes gum up with soot and oil, especially on trucks that idle a lot or do short trips, so the turbo can no longer modulate. Ford documents this as 'turbocharger carbon deposits'.
Diagnosis
- scan tool: compare commanded vs actual VGT duty and boost
- check for over/underboost DTCs (P0299, P2262, P2263)
- remove and inspect the unison ring for free movement
Fixes
clean the VGT (soak and manual free-up) as a stopgap ()
replace with a reman or upgraded turbo ()
- turbo-vgt (part category - specific model not chosen)
