Used Sprinter 3.0 V6 (OM642): what to check before you buy
The 7 documented failures of this engine, laid out in the order you inspect a truck: paperwork and VIN, a cold start, a code scan, under the hood, the test drive and a look after it. Each line is the sign as our record describes it, linked to the full failure page. At the end: what each repair costs.
1Before you go
Run the VIN and ask for the paperwork on the campaigns below: a done recall or program is a solved problem, an open one is a free repair the seller has not had done.
- Run the VIN
It confirms the engine and lists the campaigns for that model year. Whether a recall is still open on this VIN: nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- Safety recalls on this engine
2Cold start and idle
Ask the seller not to start or warm the engine before you arrive. Most of these only show on a cold engine; then let it idle and listen.
- EGR valve and intake coking
- EGR flow DTCs, rough idle and haze on cold start
- Glow plug module and cold-start roughness
- cold-start roughness/white haze that fades as the engine warms
- hard starts specifically on cold mornings
- Intake port shutoff (swirl) flap motor and stuck flaps
- reduced power / limp episodes, rough or uneven idle
- Fuel system: hard start / long crank and injector complaints
- extended cranking before start, worse cold
3Scan for codes
A basic OBD-II reader shows stored and pending codes; on a diesel ask a shop for a full scan if you can. These are the codes our records tie to known failures on this engine.
| Codes | Points to |
|---|---|
| P2006, P2015 | Intake port shutoff (swirl) flap motor and stuck flaps |
What a code means on each engine: trouble codes by engine.
4Hood up and underneath
Engine off, in daylight, with a flashlight.
- Oil cooler stack seal leak (the signature OM642 repair)
- engine oil level dropping between services with no visible pan drip
- oil seeping where the cooler stack sits between the cylinder banks, tracking down the back of the engine
- low oil warnings on trips despite correct service fills
To confirm: confirm the leak source with UV dye or a degreased engine observation - rule out the valve covers and filter housing first
5Test drive
At least 20 minutes, including a highway run and a hill or a load if you can.
- BlueTEC DEF/SCR: sensors, DEF quality, countdown derate (2010+)2010-2022
- DEF/AdBlue warning with a starting-in-X-miles countdown
- NOx sensor faults, DEF quality/level sensor misreads
- speed-limited limp (the countdown expiring) on trucks that sat or ran out of DEF
- Turbo boost control: VNT actuator, leaks, limp episodes
- reduced power / limp mode with underboost DTCs
- whistle or whoosh from leaking charge piping
- EGR valve and intake coking
- gradual power loss and higher EGTs as the intake cakes up
- Fuel system: hard start / long crank and injector complaints
- stalling or rough running under load
6After the drive
Hot engine, parked: the dipstick and the coolant reservoir tell you what the drive did. Then shut it off and restart it hot: some failures only show on a hot restart.
- Oil cooler stack seal leak (the signature OM642 repair)
- oil film on the transmission, subframe or getting onto the exhaust (smell/smoke)
To confirm: confirm the leak source with UV dye or a degreased engine observation - rule out the valve covers and filter housing first

This is a list of documented failures to check, not an inspection: a pre-purchase inspection by a diesel shop sees what we cannot. Years show where a failure covers only part of the engine's run.
