Failure mode - Mercedes-Benz 3.0L V6 Diesel (Sprinter 2007-2022)

Intake port shutoff (swirl) flap motor and stuck flaps

Reliability tier: aggregated - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/

Symptoms

Compare with the other causes of the same sign on this engine: loss of power, limp mode or derate (4 causes) · misfire, rough idle, hesitation or surging (4 causes)

Root cause

The OM642 intake manifold carries port shutoff (swirl) flaps actuated by an electric motor and linkage rods; carbon buildup and a tired actuator stick the flaps. Community and vendor guides document the motor/flap repair and the rod-kit fixes; oil mist from nearby leaks (the oil cooler stack sits above the intake area) accelerates the coking.

Diagnosis

Fixes

intake flap actuator / linkage repair or manifold cleaning; some owners fit rod repair kits - the flaps are repaired to stock function, never deleted ()
