Failure mode - Ford 3.5L EcoBoost Gasoline (F-150, Expedition, Transit, Raptor - 2011-present)

Turbo / wastegate / boost-control faults

Reliability tier: aggregated - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/

Symptoms

Compare with the other causes of the same sign on this engine: loss of power, limp mode or derate (5 causes) · oil leak, oil consumption or rising oil level (3 causes) · ticking, knocking, rattle or whine (4 causes)

Root cause

Twin small-frame turbos with electronic wastegate control: boost-position sensors, wastegate actuators, charge-pipe leaks and (high mileage) turbo bearing wear. Ford issued Gen1-era MIL/boost DTC bulletins and boost-line/hose corrections across MY2011-2015 trucks, Expedition and Transit.

Diagnosis

Fixes

charge-system leak repair first (pipes/clamps/CAC), then wastegate actuator / boost sensor; turbo replacement for confirmed bearing/oil-flood cases ()
