Failure mode - Ford 3.5L EcoBoost Gasoline (F-150, Expedition, Transit, Raptor - 2011-present)
Cam phaser / VCT rattle and cam-timing DTCs
Reliability tier: aggregated - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/
Symptoms
- cold-start rattle or ticking that fades as oil pressure builds
- MIL with cam-timing DTCs (P0011/P0015/P0016-P0019/P0021/P0025) or VCT circuit codes (P0365/P0369)
- rough or delayed cold start
- PCM updates required after VCT unit or long-block replacement (per Ford SSM)

Root cause
Cam-phaser and VCT hardware wear (plus oil-supply sensitivity to the phaser galleries) produces the cold rattle and cam-timing DTCs; Ford's response is a run of 2017-2019 SSMs prescribing VCT unit replacement plus PCM calibration updates, then TSB 20-2315 and field action 21N08 (fact-check 23.10: the earlier-cited TSB 16-0093 was removed here - it is a VCT-solenoid/P0025 bulletin for the NON-turbo 3.5L Ti-VCT, not an EcoBoost phaser item; the cold-start rattle on the 2011-2015 GTDI lives in the timing-chain FM under 16-0027/17-0026).
Diagnosis
- listen for the cold-start rattle versus a deeper knock; warm-engine repeat check
- scan cam-timing and VCT DTCs on both banks; freeze-frame at start
- verify oil level/condition and oil-filter type before condemning phasers
- if replacing VCT units or the long block: apply the PCM calibration update per the SSM
Fixes
phaser / VCT unit replacement with the updated hardware and the PCM calibration update; oil-system service while in there ()
- 3.5L EcoBoost Cam Phaser / Timing Actuator (AT4Z-6256-B)
- vct-solenoid - more than one option: 3.5L EcoBoost VCT Solenoid (Ford AT4Z-6M280-A / -B, one per intake/exhaust position; four per engine), 3.5L EcoBoost VCT Solenoid (Ford HL3Z-6M280-A, 2017+ applications)
- 3.5L EcoBoost Valve Rocker Arm (Ford HL3Z-6564-A, 2017-2020 F-150 / 2018-2019 Expedition-Navigator)
- Engine oil and filter change (service item, all 3.5L EcoBoost applications)
