Fuel injector stiction / failure

Symptoms

rough cold idle or misfire that clears as the engine warms up
white smoke on cold start
hard start, low power
low cylinder contribution on a scan-tool balance / buzz test

Root cause

6.0 injectors are HEUI (hydraulically actuated, electronically controlled, oil-driven). 'Stiction' is static friction in the injector spool valve from oil varnish and deposits, worse with extended oil-change intervals, wrong-viscosity or non-spec oil, and poor oil quality. Intensifier plunger and barrel wear also contributes. A separate failure path is the injector body / copper combustion seal and O-rings leaking fuel into the oil or coolant.

Diagnosis

cylinder contribution / buzz test, cold and warm
note whether the miss clears with temperature (points to stiction)
oil analysis; check for high-pressure oil aeration
inspect under the valve covers
