Recipe - Duramax 6.6L V8 Turbo Diesel (GM HD, LB7-LMM 2001-2010)
Specific Fix build
Reliability tier: aggregated - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/
VGT turbo service path (VGT turbo vane carbon / actuator wear (LLY+)): boost flutter, slow spool, smoke under load. Diagnose before hardware: verify vane movement (solenoid command vs the vane-position sensor reading) and rule out boost leaks and filter restriction first. Hardware route: the turbo control solenoid (98061571, 2004-2010), the vane position sensor (19210790 LLY / 12643471 LBZ-LMM), then the generation-correct turbo assembly (97720447 LB7 reman, 97387896 LLY, 98011735 LBZ, 12639460 LMM).
Parts
- Duramax Turbo Control Solenoid Valve (OEM) - the vane actuation element - first hardware check in the owner path (qty 1)
- Duramax LLY Turbo Vane Position Sensor (OEM) - vane position feedback sensor, LLY window (qty 1)
- Duramax LBZ/LMM Turbo Vane Position Sensor (OEM) - vane position feedback sensor, 2006-2010 (qty 1)
- Duramax LB7 Turbocharger (Reman OEM) - LB7-generation turbo (reman; reman alternatives 97720748/49 noted on the record) (qty 1)
- Duramax LLY Turbocharger (OEM) - LLY Garrett VGT assembly (qty 1)
- Duramax LBZ Turbocharger Assembly (OEM) - LBZ VGT assembly (w/o inlet pipe) (qty 1)
- Duramax LMM Turbocharger Assembly (OEM) - LMM VGT assembly (qty 1)
Install order
- rule out boost leaks and intake restriction
- verify vane movement (command vs position sensor)
- replace solenoid/sensor per findings
- replace the turbo assembly when vanes/shaft confirm wear
- desoot-and-service first is the community-standard path before full replacement
Expected outcome
boost control restored, no flutter, spool and EGT behavior back to normal
Do not
- do not order a turbo before the solenoid/sensor path is cleared - the assembly is the last resort, not the first
- do not skip the intake restriction check - a plugged filter mimics VGT failure
- do not defeat or gut the VGT - retained emissions/controls hardware
Parts budget
About $240-$3,250 in parts. It depends on what the diagnosis finds; each option below is what you buy together. Prices marked "at Dave's" are Dave's Auto Center's, the same as in his store; the others are approximate prices from OEM and maker catalogs, rounded (a manufacturer's list price can run higher). Parts only, no labor.
