Recipe - Duramax 6.6L V8 Turbo Diesel (GM HD, LB7-LMM 2001-2010)

Specific Fix build

Reliability tier: aggregated - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/

Repair path for the LB7's defining failure (LB7 injector failures (the defining repair of the generation)): hard starts, white smoke, fuel dilution on 2001-early-2004 trucks. The catalog-verified route is a reman 8-piece injector kit (OEM 97729095) for the LB7 generation, or per-injector stock remans for LLY/LBZ/LMM (BD-Built stock remans carried as Dave's Auto Center options on the per-generation records). Diagnosis before ordering: cylinder contribution test, then per-injector return-flow check to isolate offenders. MY2004 straddles the LB7->LLY build-date switch - verify the generation by VIN/RPO before ordering either style.

Install order

  1. diagnose (contribution test, return-flow per injector)
  2. verify generation by VIN (MY2004 switch)
  3. replace failed injector(s) or the set
  4. inspect/flush fuel system for contamination
  5. fit lift pump + fresh filters as the protection layer

Expected outcome

consistent cold starts, balanced contribution, no fuel dilution of the oil

Do not

Parts budget

About $350-$410 in parts. It depends on what the diagnosis finds; each option below is what you buy together. Prices marked "at Dave's" are Dave's Auto Center's, the same as in his store; the others are approximate prices from OEM and maker catalogs, rounded (a manufacturer's list price can run higher). Parts only, no labor.

DIY or shop: Shop-recommended: injector cup/seal work on a hot-side common-rail engine is not a first DIY job.
