Failure mode - Duramax 6.6L V8 Turbo Diesel (GM HD, LB7-LMM 2001-2010)

LB7 injector failures (the defining repair of the generation)

Reliability tier: aggregated - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/

Symptoms

Compare with the other causes of the same sign on this engine: hard start, long crank or no-start · white smoke from the exhaust (2 causes) · oil leak, oil consumption or rising oil level · misfire, rough idle, hesitation or surging (2 causes)

Root cause

The LB7's injectors are the generation's documented weak surface (the Duramax history source cites GM learning from LB7 injector problems in the next generation). Original injectors at higher mileage are on borrowed time; contamination accelerates failures.

Diagnosis

Fixes

replace failed injector(s) or the set; keep the fuel system clean and consider contamination protection on a repair ()
