Recipe - Ford 6.4L Power Stroke Diesel
Bulletproof Budget build
Reliability tier: aggregated - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/
The 6.4 reliability package (modes Head cracking under advanced-timing tunes / Piston ring failure #7/#8 (regen fuel wash) / plus cooling discipline): stock the truck against its two tuning-adjacent killers - head cracking on advanced-timing tunes and #7/#8 ring scuffing from regen fuel wash. Head studs while the head is off or before tuning; oil-change discipline SHORTER than the interval because regens dilute the oil; coolant kept fresh for the front-cover cavitation risk.
Parts
- 6.4L Power Stroke 6.4L Power Stroke Head Stud Kit (ARP 2000) - ARP head studs (250-4203, verified two-store) - clamp before cylinder pressure does the damage (qty 1)
- 6.4L Power Stroke Head Gasket Set (OEM) - multi-layer gaskets for the stud install (qty 1)
- 6.4L Power Stroke Oil Cooler (OEM) - oil cooler renew if deltas run hot - the 6.4's oil/coolant heat exchanger clogs like every Ford HD (qty 1)
- 6.4L Power Stroke Engine Oil, CK-4 15W-40 (6.4L Power Stroke spec) - CK-4 15W-40 on shortened intervals - regen fuel wash thins the film that protects #7/#8 (qty 1)
- 6.4L Power Stroke Ford Specification Gold HOAT Coolant (6.4L Power Stroke) - correct chemistry, fresh - cavitation and corrosion control (qty 1)
Install order
- decide the tune question first: studs are cheap insurance ONLY ahead of cylinder pressure - a stock truck can wait
- head studs + new gaskets (an in-frame opportunity job, not an assembly-just-for-this job)
- oil-cooler service if thermal deltas say so; fresh correct coolant
- adopt the shortened oil schedule permanently - it is the ring-scuff prevention, not a one-time part
Expected outcome
Head clamped, oil film protected, cooling honest - the two signature 6.4 killers largely defused.
Do not
- do not run advanced-timing tunes on stock head bolts and then blame the gasket - the mode record names the cause
Parts budget
About $420-$790 in parts. It depends on what the diagnosis finds; each option below is what you buy together. Prices marked "at Dave's" are Dave's Auto Center's, the same as in his store; the others are approximate prices from OEM and maker catalogs, rounded (a manufacturer's list price can run higher). Parts only, no labor.
DIY or shop: Shop: stud install is head-off work.
