Failure mode - Ford 6.4L Power Stroke
Piston ring failure #7/#8 (regen fuel wash)
Reliability tier: verified - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/
Symptoms
- oil consumption rising; blue smoke
- rough running / power loss on #7 or #8; engine replacement conversations
- fuel-diluted oil history (failed regens) precedes it
Root cause
In-cylinder DPF regeneration injects fuel late in the cycle; on #7/#8 the wash strips the oil film and the rings scuff/fail. The sourced history names ring failure at those cylinders as the known 6.4 internal failure; oil dilution is the mechanism to monitor.
Diagnosis
- track oil level/consumption trends; lab oil analysis for fuel %
- cylinder-balance test + compression/leak-down when a hole drops out
- inspect for failed-regen patterns (aborted regens, city duty) before blaming hardware
Fixes
engine-level decision: reman/used long block vs rebuild with upgraded rings/pistons (state cost tier explicitly in recipes) ()
- engine-long-block (part category - specific model not chosen)
reduce the driver: regen health, oil-change intervals shortened on city cycles ()
- engine-oil (part category - specific model not chosen)
