Recipe - Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel
Specific Fix build
Reliability tier: aggregated - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/
Injector stiction repair (mode Fuel injector stiction / failure): rough cold start and smoking that clears hot - the oil-side story of tired HEUI injector internals plus marginal oil pressure. Work the chain: fresh oil of correct spec, injector o-rings, fuel delivery (blue spring), and test the FICM voltage before blaming injectors wholesale.
Parts
- 6.0L Power Stroke STC Fitting Update Kit (high-pressure oil rail) - STC fitting kit (4C3Z-9B246-F) - the updated ball-tube fittings; the oil-side piece of the stiction story on 2004+ trucks (qty 1)
- 6.0L Power Stroke Fuel Filter Set (HFCM lower + secondary/upper) - clean fuel pressure supports the whole diagnosis (qty 1)
- 6.0L Power Stroke Fuel Pressure Regulator "Blue Spring" Upgrade Kit - blue spring kit - restores fuel pressure the STC-era trucks run low (qty 1)
- 6.0L Power Stroke FICM (Fuel Injection Control Module), complete - FICM 48V rail sags produce identical symptoms - test voltage before ordering injectors (qty 1)
- 6.0L Power Stroke FICM Power Supply (rebuild board, higher output) - FICM power supply repair path if the 48V rail is the culprit (qty 1)
Install order
- oil first: correct-spec oil, fresh - stiction complaints start at the oil film
- FICM voltage test: 48V rail at crank vs spec
- injector o-rings; fuel pressure with filters + blue spring
- only then injector replacement for the specific dead-leg cylinders
Expected outcome
Cold starts smooth out; no more clear-up-when-hot ritual.
Do not
- do not replace all injectors for a stiction complaint before the FICM voltage test - the $145 supply fix beats $3000 of injectors
Parts budget
About $85-$300 in parts. It depends on what the diagnosis finds; each option below is what you buy together. Prices marked "at Dave's" are Dave's Auto Center's, the same as in his store; the others are approximate prices from OEM and maker catalogs, rounded (a manufacturer's list price can run higher). Parts only, no labor.
DIY or shop: Either: oil/filters/o-rings DIY; FICM swap DIY-doable.
