The gas EGR valve sticks with carbon (the same soot behavior as the diesel side, milder) - P0401/P0402, rough idle, knock under load. Valve PN varies by engine and year - match the old part or run the VIN. Clean-or-replace is a genuine contested call: a sticking valve often cleans up and lasts, a leaking diaphragm does not. Do NOT confuse the gas EGR path with the diesel EGR-cooler system - different parts entirely.

The gas EGR valve failure mode is well corroborated (Ford EGR bulletins + VOQ), but no single valve PN is pinned here - the valve varies by engine and year. Match the old part or run the VIN; the clean-vs-replace call is left to you and your shop (see the contested note on the failure mode).
