Failure mode - Ford 3.5L EcoBoost Gasoline (F-150, Expedition, Transit, Raptor - 2011-present)
High-pressure fuel pump (GDI) failures
Reliability tier: aggregated - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/
Symptoms
- long crank on start-up
- random misfires / hiccups under acceleration
- sudden power loss in motion
- MIL with fuel-pressure DTCs (P0087 family)

Root cause
The cam-driven GDI high-pressure pump is a known wear item on this engine family; failure modes documented by owners include pressure loss (long crank, misfire, power loss) and, in isolated reports, internal pump damage. Community documentation spans Gen1 (threads since 2011) and the Gen2 era.
Diagnosis
- log fuel rail pressure desired vs actual on a hot restart and under load
- check for P0087/P0088 and for metal on the HPFP follower path (oil analysis)
- rule out the in-tank pump and filter before the HPFP
- on confirmed failure: follow the contamination procedure before installing the new pump
Fixes
HPFP replacement with the full fuel-contamination procedure (flush/rails/injector inspection) when the pump failed internally ()
- hpfp - more than one option: 3.5L EcoBoost High-Pressure Fuel Pump, Gen1 (current number BL3Z-9350-D), 3.5L EcoBoost High-Pressure Fuel Pump, Gen2 (current number HL3Z-9350-B)
- HPFP failure contamination procedure - flush, rails, injector inspection (service item)
- fuel-pump - more than one option: 3.5L EcoBoost In-Tank Fuel Pump Module, Gen1 (Ford CL3Z-9H307-A 2WD / DL3Z-9H307-A 4WD), 3.5L EcoBoost In-Tank Fuel Pump Module, Gen2 (Ford HL3Z-9H307-E, supersedes -A)
