“Would Not Go Over 10 Miles per Hour”: Sprinter Owners on Limp Mode, and the Cheap Sensor Behind Half of It
Published · 4 min read
When a Mercedes Sprinter goes into limp mode, it can drop from highway speed to a crawl in seconds, often with a row of warning lights. Owners assume the engine is failing. In their complaints to NHTSA, half of them found something much smaller.
Here are five owners, in their own words, and what their stories have in common.
- Wheel speed sensor, with ABS and ESP lights14
- EGR valve4
- DEF, NOx sensor or SCR2
- Turbo, boost hose or intake resonator3
- Fuel pressure1
- Transmission1
- No cause named3
NHTSA owner complaints on 2007-2022 Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vans (Dodge, Freightliner and Mercedes-Benz), pulled 2026-10-23. Keyword matches; a count of reports, not a failure rate.
1. The lights come first
"Three warning lights illuminated advising I had lost my ABS and my cruise control failed. The vehicle soon went into limp mode."
Owner of a 2015 Sprinter, 2019. NHTSA complaint 11253828
ABS, ESP (stability control) and cruise control dropping out together is the signature. All three use the wheel speed sensors, so when a rear sensor fails, the van loses all three, and owners and dealers describe the van then limiting power. aggregated
2. It happens at highway speed
"Wheel speed sensor failure caused vehicle to disable cruise control, ABS brake system and put the transmission in limp mode. Cannot accelerate more than 25 mph on the interstate."
Owner of a 2016 Sprinter, at 62 mph, 2020. NHTSA complaint 11362944
Fourteen of the 28 limp-mode complaints in our set name a wheel speed sensor or describe the ABS and ESP lights, more than every engine cause put together. They span 2007 to 2017 vans, most of them 2013 and 2016.
There is a recall for some of them. Recall 21V-042 covers 2012-2018 Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner Sprinter 3500 vans upfitted as campers or RVs: the stability control can become disabled, and dealers replace the rear wheel speed sensor with a more robust one. verified NHTSA's investigation of the same sensor (PE20-014) covered 2012-2018 Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vans, and owners report that Mercedes extended the warranty on it for some vans. aggregated Ask a dealer what applies to your VIN.
3. Sometimes it is the engine: the EGR valve
"The vehicle goes into limp mode and speed is reduced to 20 mph."
Owner of a 2012 Sprinter-based motor home, after the fifth EGR valve failure in 11,000 miles, 2015. NHTSA complaint 10705179
The EGR valve is the most named engine cause, in 4 complaints. Carbon builds up in the valve and the intake, which our Sprinter V6 failure map covers.
4. Or an emissions sensor
"My Sprinter went into limp mode. Would not go over 10 miles per hour. Had it towed to a Mercedes Benz dealer."
Owner of a 2014 Sprinter, 2021. The dealer found a failed upstream NOx sensor. NHTSA complaint 11404903
NOx sensors and the DEF system can force a reduced-power mode too, usually after a warning. See the DEF and SCR failure map.
5. Or a plastic part on the intake
"This is caused by a failure of the 'resonator', a plastic part that is part of the air intake for the turbo charger."
Owner of an early Sprinter, 2009. NHTSA complaint 10268926
A cracked intake resonator or boost hose lets boost escape, and the engine computer reacts as if something worse had failed. Our turbo and boost failure map lists the usual leaks.
What to do when it happens
- Get off the road safely. The van will keep moving, slowly. Use the hazard lights.
- Note which lights are on. ABS, ESP and cruise together point to a wheel speed sensor. A check engine light alone points to the engine side.
- Restart once, parked. Some owners say the van ran normally after a restart, which buys time but does not fix it.
- Read the codes and run the VIN for recall 21V-042 and any coverage before paying for a sensor.
FAQ
Why does my Sprinter go into limp mode with ABS and ESP lights on?
In owner complaints, the most common cause is a failed rear wheel speed sensor. It takes out ABS, stability control and cruise control together, and the van limits power. Recall 21V-042 replaces the sensor on 2012-2018 Sprinter 3500 campers and RVs.
Can a wheel speed sensor cause limp mode on a Sprinter?
Yes. It is the cause named in 14 of the 28 Sprinter limp-mode complaints in our data, more than all engine causes combined.
What else puts a Sprinter in limp mode?
Owners name the EGR valve, NOx sensors and the DEF system, turbo and boost leaks including the intake resonator, and occasionally fuel pressure.
