Recipe - Ram 1500 EcoDiesel 3.0L V6 (2014-2019)

Specific Fix build

Reliability tier: verified - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/

DEF system job for the 3.0L EcoDiesel (mode DEF tank / heater faults (frozen-DEF derate cycle)): 'SERVICE DEF SYSTEM - ENGINE WILL NOT RESTART IN 200 MI' cycle, stuck gauge, cold-weather faults. Read the codes first (NOx-sensor faults mimic the warnings), then work tank-side: harness -> doser -> tank unit. Two tank families split the run (early 2015 / late 2017-2019).

Parts

Install order

  1. read the DEF codes first - NOx-sensor and doser faults trigger the same warnings; do not buy a tank on a hunch
  2. cold-weather-only faults = heater circuit: check the tank harness/connector (early trucks) before the tank unit
  3. dosing faults / crystallization at the injector: replace the dosing module
  4. tank unit confirmed (heater open / level hardware): order by the truck's year - early 2015 vs 2017-2019 families (2014/2016 = VIN verify at order)
  5. clear codes, complete a drive cycle, confirm the countdown warning is gone BEFORE the 200-mile deadline

Expected outcome

Parts budget

About $230-$2,350 in parts. It depends on what the diagnosis finds; each option below is what you buy together. Prices marked "at Dave's" are Dave's Auto Center's, the same as in his store; the others are approximate prices from OEM and maker catalogs, rounded (a manufacturer's list price can run higher). Parts only, no labor.
