Recipe - Ford F-150 3.0L Power Stroke V6 (2018-2021)
Specific Fix build
Reliability tier: verified - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/
DEF heater job for the F-150 3.0L Power Stroke (mode DEF heater faults and harness corrosion (P20BA)): P20BA / 'DEF fluid heater malfunction' in FordPass. The common root cause is harness/connector corrosion, NOT the heater - TSB MC-10236685 (05.2023) exists precisely for that. Work the wiring first, then the tank-side hardware.
Parts
- F-150 3.0L Power Stroke DEF Module (Ford HC3Z-5J229-A, 2018-2019) - DEF module (HC3Z-5J229-A) - the cheap electronics before tank/pump (qty 1)
- F-150 3.0L Power Stroke DEF Tank Assembly (Ford JL3Z-5J250-A, 2018-2019) - DEF tank assembly (JL3Z-5J250-A) - the heater/level hardware when the element tests open (qty 1)
- F-150 3.0L Power Stroke DEF Pump / Sender Assembly (Ford HC3Z-5J229-B, 2018-2021) - DEF supply pump (HC3Z-5J229-B) - tank-side pressure faults (qty 1)
- F-150 3.0L Power Stroke DEF Dosing Injector (Ford JL3Z-5J281-A, 2018-2021) - DEF dosing injector (JL3Z-5J281-A) - crystallization/dosing faults (qty 1)
Install order
- TSB MC-10236685 first: read DTCs, inspect the heater harness/connector for corrosion, repair per the TSB (splice + cable tie) - this fixes most P20BA cases without parts
- element still open = tank-side hardware: module first, then the tank assembly
- dosing/pressure codes: verify DEF quality, then the pump/injector side
Expected outcome
Parts budget
About $200-$960 in parts. It depends on what the diagnosis finds; each option below is what you buy together. Prices marked "at Dave's" are Dave's Auto Center's, the same as in his store; the others are approximate prices from OEM and maker catalogs, rounded (a manufacturer's list price can run higher). Parts only, no labor.
