Recipe - Ford F-150 3.0L Power Stroke V6 (2018-2021)

Reliability build

Reliability tier: aggregated - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/

CP4.2 survival and recovery plan for the F-150 3.0L Power Stroke (mode CP4.2 high-pressure pump failure (contamination cascade)): the same Bosch CP4.2 family as the 6.7 PSD / LML. Prevention is filter discipline (inspect for metallic debris at every change) and optionally a lift pump. A confirmed failure with debris = the full cascade (pump + injector kits) - verify metal-free BEFORE replacing the pump alone.

Parts

Install order

  1. prevention: filter service on schedule; cut open / inspect for metallic debris every change
  2. P0087/hard-start appears: check the filter for debris BEFORE ordering parts - metal found means the cascade, not just the pump
  3. clean system: replace the pump (firewall-side labor - shop recommended)
  4. debris found: pump + injector kit + lines flush - budget the full cascade

Expected outcome

Parts budget

About $90-$1,700 in parts. It depends on what the diagnosis finds; each option below is what you buy together. Prices marked "at Dave's" are Dave's Auto Center's, the same as in his store; the others are approximate prices from OEM and maker catalogs, rounded (a manufacturer's list price can run higher). Parts only, no labor.
