Recipe - Mercedes-Benz 2.1L Twin-Turbo Diesel (Sprinter 2014-2018)
Specific Fix build
Reliability tier: aggregated - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/
EGR coking and swirl-flap service on the 2.1: EGR soot jams the port shutoff flaps (P2017-family codes) and cokes the valve/cooler. Clean first; the valve, cooler and manifold are the paid upgrades per diagnosis. The cooler has a coolant-into-intake leak mode - pressure-test when white smoke and coolant loss appear together.
Parts
- OM651 EGR Valve Gasket (651-142-23-80) - single-use, any valve-off service (qty 1)
- OM651 Intake Manifold Seal (651-091-00-60-64) - single-use manifold seal (qty 1)
- OM651 EGR Valve (651-140-08-60, current) - valve replacement path (qty 1)
- OM651 EGR Cooler (651-140-07-00, current) - cooler replacement path (leak or plugged) (qty 1)
- OM651 Intake Manifold with Port Shutoff Flaps (651-090-00-37) - seized flaps / stripped motor path (qty 1)
Install order
- read intake-flap and EGR DTCs; command the actuator and the valve
- pressure-test the cooling system and inspect the intake for coolant film (cooler-leak mode)
- cleaning path: decarbonize valve/intake; new seals on reassembly
- valve replacement path
- cooler replacement path
- seized flaps / dead motor: manifold replacement
Expected outcome
Flap and EGR DTCs cleared; coolant loss (cooler mode) stopped.
Parts budget
About $10-$540 in parts. It depends on what the diagnosis finds; each option below is what you buy together. Prices marked "at Dave's" are Dave's Auto Center's, the same as in his store; the others are approximate prices from OEM and maker catalogs, rounded (a manufacturer's list price can run higher). Parts only, no labor.
