Recipe - Ford 7.3L Godzilla Gasoline (Super Duty 2020+, E-Series cutaway 2021+)
Specific Fix build
Reliability tier: verified - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/
Tapping that follows one cylinder on the 7.3L Godzilla: check Ford program 24B27 first, separate the oil pump drive gear (lower front, 2020-2022) from the valvetrain, then lifters and the cam lobe (mode Cam lobe and lifter (tappet) wear, worst with long idling).
Parts

Install order
- check by VIN whether the Ford 24B27 PCM update has been done (free; Ford's remedy for idle-time cam/tappet wear)
- locate the noise: lower front at the timing cover/oil pan seam on 2020-2022 = oil pump drive gear first (SSM 50830/51330, mode Cracked oil pump drive gear (front-of-engine tick at idle, 2020-2022 7.3)); top end following one cylinder = lifter/cam
- read misfire counters; a misfire that follows the cylinder, not the coil or plug, points to the valvetrain
- cut the oil filter open: metal means the damage has circulated - price the bigger job
- replace the collapsed lifter(s) and inspect the matching cam lobe; a flaked lobe means a camshaft
Expected outcome
Quiet top end and no misfire counters; the 24B27 software addresses the idle-time oil supply Ford names.
Do not
- do not condemn plugs or coils when the misfire stays with the cylinder
- do not reuse a lifter or cam with metal already in the filter
Parts budget
About $35-$290 in parts. It depends on what the diagnosis finds; each option below is what you buy together. Prices marked "at Dave's" are Dave's Auto Center's, the same as in his store; the others are approximate prices from OEM and maker catalogs, rounded (a manufacturer's list price can run higher). Parts only, no labor.
