Recipe - GM 8.1L / 6.0L Vortec Gasoline (HD 2001-2007, Express/Savana vans incl.)
Specific Fix build
Reliability tier: aggregated - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/
Hard-cold-start path (Hard cold start / fuel delivery wear): the owner record puts most cases on tired in-tank pumps and rail pressure bleed-down, not ignition. Gauge first: pump prime at key-on, rail pressure hold (~50-60 psi after key-off). Catalog-verified parts so far: the fuel pressure regulator kit (19245530, through 2004), fuel pressure/temperature sensors (2002-2006 6.0L), and injectors/rails per engine. The in-tank pump module itself is not listed in the catalog categories we checked - honest gap, record it when found.
Parts
- GM Truck Fuel Pressure Regulator Kit (OEM) - the regulator behind pressure bleed-down (1996-2004 window incl. 8.1L) (qty 1)
- 6.0L Vortec Fuel Pressure Sensor (OEM) - fuel pressure sensor (2002-2006 6.0L) - the gauge-to-ECU path (qty 1)
- 6.0L Vortec Fuel Temperature Sensor (OEM) - fuel temperature sensor (2002-2006 6.0L) (qty 1)
- 6.0L Vortec Fuel Injector (OEM) - 6.0L per-cylinder injector when leak-down points to injectors (qty 1)
- 8.1L Vortec Fuel Injector (OEM) - 8.1L injector (2001-2007) (qty 1)
- 6.0L Vortec Fuel Rail Assembly 2004-2007 (OEM) - rail assembly for the 2004-2007 6.0L when the rail side leaks (qty 1)
Install order
- listen for pump prime at key-on; gauge rail pressure and hold
- rule out rusted lines and a tired regulator
- sensor data check (pressure/temperature)
- injector leak-down test; service injectors/rails per findings
- in-tank pump module replacement when prime is weak (module PN not found yet)
Expected outcome
prime restored, pressure holds after key-off, cold cranking back to normal
Do not
- do not throw a pump at it before the pressure-hold test - bleed-down often lives in the regulator or injectors
- do not ignore rusted supply lines - they kill new pumps
- do not chase ignition parts on a pressure complaint (and vice versa) - test first
Parts budget
About $35-$220 in parts. It depends on what the diagnosis finds; each option below is what you buy together. Prices marked "at Dave's" are Dave's Auto Center's, the same as in his store; the others are approximate prices from OEM and maker catalogs, rounded (a manufacturer's list price can run higher). Parts only, no labor.
DIY or shop: Mixed: gauge work and sensors are DIY; in-tank pump and injector/rail service are shop-light.
