Recipe - Ford 3.5L EcoBoost Gasoline (F-150, Expedition, Transit, Raptor - 2011-present)
Specific Fix build
Reliability tier: aggregated - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/
Cam-phaser rattle / timing-chain service: the cold-start rattle and cam-timing DTCs (P0011/P0015-P0019/P0365/P0369) span generations - Gen2 got formal TSBs (20-2191/20-2166/20-2315) and the 21N08/21B10-S1 PCM-reprogram field actions; Gen1 carries the chain-wear story (TSB 17-0026). Diagnose noise type first: phaser rattle is a start-up transient, chain slap tracks rpm. Confirm the PCM calibration is current before condemning hardware, and apply the required calibration update after VCT-unit or long-block replacement.
Parts
- 3.5L EcoBoost Cam Phaser / Timing Actuator (AT4Z-6256-B) - VCT phaser/actuator (AT4Z-6256-B) - the rattle hardware (qty 1)
- 3.5L EcoBoost Timing Chain (AT4Z-6268-C) - timing chain (AT4Z-6268-C) (qty 1)
- 3.5L EcoBoost Timing Chain Guide (AT4Z-6B274-A) - chain guide (AT4Z-6B274-A) (qty 1)
- 3.5L EcoBoost Timing Chain Tensioner (BL3Z-6L266-A) - chain tensioner (BL3Z-6L266-A) (qty 1)
- 3.5L EcoBoost Service Engine Assy / Long Block, Gen1 (DL3Z-6006-ARM) - long block when guide debris/correlation damage advanced (Gen1 reman DL3Z-6006-ARM) (qty 1)
Install order
- classify the noise: cold-start rattle (phaser) vs rpm-tracking slap (chain) vs top-cover tick (TSB 20-2315 family)
- scan cam/VCT DTCs both banks; verify oil level/condition and filter; check for an open 21N08/21B10-S1 PCM reprogram before hardware
- pull the front cover; inspect chain, guides, tensioner and phaser play
- replace the phaser and any worn chain hardware; apply the SSM-required PCM calibration after VCT/long-block work
- if correlation damage reached the block: long block with the same calibration step
Expected outcome
Rattle and cam-timing codes resolved; the calibration update prevents the repeat DTC cycle.
Parts budget
About $400-$6,050 in parts. It depends on what the diagnosis finds; each option below is what you buy together. Prices marked "at Dave's" are Dave's Auto Center's, the same as in his store; the others are approximate prices from OEM and maker catalogs, rounded (a manufacturer's list price can run higher). Parts only, no labor.
