Killer Dowel Pin (KDP) prevention for the 12v P-pump engines (mode Killer Dowel Pin (KDP) on the 12v P-pump engines): the dowel pin that locates the front cover can back out and drop into the gear case. The tab kit locks the pin from behind the front cover. Do it while the truck is healthy - the pin costs a $45 tab kit now or an engine later.

Parts

Install order

  1. confirm the generation: 12v P-pump 1994-early 1998 (24v 1998.5+ engines have the pin already treated differently - check the record notes)
  2. rotate the engine to access the front cover; inspect for pin protrusion before closing it back up
  3. install the tabs over the dowel pin bores per the kit template
  4. seal and torque the front cover; refill fluids

Expected outcome

The dowel pin is mechanically trapped; the classic KDP failure is permanently prevented.

Parts budget

About $220-$520 in parts. It depends on what the diagnosis finds; each option below is what you buy together. Prices marked "at Dave's" are Dave's Auto Center's, the same as in his store; the others are approximate prices from OEM and maker catalogs, rounded (a manufacturer's list price can run higher). Parts only, no labor.

DIY or shop: Either: a competent DIY shop-corner job in a day; a shop does it in a few hours.
