Recipe - Ford 6.4L Power Stroke Diesel
Specific Fix build
Reliability tier: aggregated - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/
The K16 high-pressure pump event (mode High-pressure pump (Siemens K16) destruction): the 6.4's signature catastrophic failure. Internal pump wear sheds metal into the entire fuel rail - the pump replacement alone is NOT the repair. The full response is flush the system, replace the pump, and assess/replace injectors downstream, or the new pump eats the same meal.
Parts
- 6.4L Power Stroke High-Pressure Fuel Pump (Siemens K16), Ford reman - reman K16 high-pressure pump (8C3Z-9A543-DRM) - the core replacement (qty 1)
- 6.4L Power Stroke 6.4L Fuel System Flush / Cleaning (post-K16 failure) - flush the rails/lines/tank before the new pump runs - skip this and the pump dies again (qty 1)
- 6.4L Power Stroke Fuel Injector (Siemens piezo), Ford reman - injectors downstream of the event: assess balance rates; replace where metal passed (qty 1)
- 6.4L Power Stroke Fuel Filter Element (OEM) - fresh filters at final fill (qty 1)
Install order
- confirm the event: metal in the primary filter, rail-pressure faults, chips in the sample
- drop and flush the tank, replace all filters, flush rails and lines
- replace the K16 pump
- assess injectors (balance rates/cut tests); replace the affected set
- prime, verify rail pressure, short interval oil change to clear any fuel dilution
Expected outcome
Rail pressure stable, no repeat metal generation.
Do not
- do not install a new K16 into an unflushed system - the most expensive way to buy the same failure twice
Parts budget
About $2,100-$2,400 in parts, plus parts we have no price for. It depends on what the diagnosis finds; each option below is what you buy together. Prices marked "at Dave's" are Dave's Auto Center's, the same as in his store; the others are approximate prices from OEM and maker catalogs, rounded (a manufacturer's list price can run higher). Parts only, no labor.
