VCT Solenoid (cam timing oil control valve, 5.4L 3V)

aggregated BrandMotorcraft / Dorman (917-250-class)

The oil-control valve that commands the 5.4L 3V cam phasers. Only the 5.4L 3V carries VCT - the 6.8L 3V heads are non-VCT, so there is no VCT solenoid on the V10. Fails sticking with sludged oil; symptoms are the cold rattle combined with timing DTCs (P0011/P0012 family) and rough cam-timing advance. There is no single published PN across years - match the old part / run the VIN. Prevention is oil discipline (correct viscosity, short intervals) - sludge is what kills these.

What this record does and doesn't claim

The VCT-solenoid failure mode and its oil-sludge mechanism are well-settled community knowledge, but a canonical per-year part number is not pinned here (PN varies by year - match the old part or run the VIN). The 6.8L 3V is non-VCT per the Ford powertrain tables, so this part does not apply to V10s.
