Failure mode - Ram 1500 EcoDiesel 3.0L V6 (2014-2019)
Crankshaft tone-wheel delamination and engine stall (recalls 20V-475 / 23V-411)
Reliability tier: verified - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/
Symptoms
- engine stall without warning (in motion), then no-start / long-crank
- crankshaft-position sensor codes; on some trucks the dislodged tone wheel destroys the sensor and can point at deeper crank damage
Compare with the other causes of the same sign on this engine: hard start, long crank or no-start (2 causes) · stalls or dies while driving
Root cause
The crankshaft position sensor tone wheel may delaminate, dropping sync between crank signal, injector pulses and cam timing - engine stall. Two campaigns: 20V-475 (FCA W58, 08/2020, 2014-2018) and its 2023 expansion 23V-411 (FCA 66A, 2014-2019). Remedy is software: a PCM update keeps propulsion alive on the camshaft signal. VOQ: 263 of 1,785 VIN-confirmed complaints describe a stall or no-start (the platform's largest cluster); 167 name the tone wheel or crank sensor (peak 2015:62, 2016:39).
Diagnosis
- check both campaigns (20V-475 / 23V-411) by VIN first - the software remedy is free
- stall + crank-sensor codes with an intact harness = inspect the tone wheel (flexplate side) before replacing sensors
Fixes
PCM software update per campaign (free) - the car keeps running on the camshaft signal if the crank signal drops ()
replace the crankshaft position sensor when damaged by a dislodged tone wheel ()
mechanical repair of the tone-wheel assembly when the hardware itself failed (flexplate-side work) ()
