Failure mode - Ford F-150 3.0L Power Stroke V6 (2018-2021)
EGR bypass valve / EGR cooler faults (recall 20E04)
Reliability tier: verified - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/
Symptoms
- check engine with EGR codes - P2457 (cooler performance) points at a clogged cooler, bypass-valve codes at the valve
- the EGR bypass valve was subject to Ford recall/emission campaign 20E04 - verify completion by VIN before paying for parts
Root cause
The 3.0L's EGR path fails at the bypass valve (official campaign 20E04) and the cooler (soot clogging, P2457). VOQ is thin (2 of 59 VIN-confirmed diesel complaints - the engine sold in small numbers) but the official recall plus forum P2457 write-ups make this the platform's best-documented emissions failure.
Diagnosis
- read the EGR codes first and check recall 20E04 status by VIN - a completed campaign changes the diagnosis
- P2457 with no drivability complaint = cooler performance test before parts
Fixes
replace the EGR bypass valve (verify the 20E04 campaign status first) ()
the cooler is not serviced separately in the dealer catalog - the complete EGR assembly (cooler + bypass valve) is the service part ()
