Failure mode - Mercedes-Benz 2.1L Twin-Turbo Diesel (Sprinter 2014-2018)

Timing chain stretch (long-oil-interval related)

Reliability tier: aggregated - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/

Symptoms

Compare with the other causes of the same sign on this engine: ticking, knocking, rattle or whine (2 causes) · metal in the fuel filter or oil

Root cause

OM651 chain stretch is not universal but documented, and owners tie it to long oil-change intervals (the factory interval letter moved some US vans to 20,000 miles; community consensus is to change far sooner). The standard advice is tensioner replacement at the first sustained rattle; a full drive job only when correlation DTCs appear.
