Failure mode - Duramax 6.6L V8 Turbo Diesel (GM HD, LML 2011-2016; LGH vans 2011-2016)

DEF system failures: tank heater, dosing, quality (LML)

Reliability tier: verified - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/

Symptoms

Compare with the other causes of the same sign on this engine: loss of power, limp mode or derate (4 causes) · def, dpf and regeneration warnings (3 causes)

Root cause

The DEF subsystem (tank heater element, level/quality sensors, dosing injector) fails ahead of the engine: heater elements short or open, tanks and harnesses are replaced as assemblies, and poor-quality or contaminated DEF crystallizes the doser. The LML is the first Duramax carrying the full DEF/SCR loop, so early years carry the heaviest complaint load.

Diagnosis

Fixes

replace the failed DEF heater/tank assembly or dosing components; use certified DEF fluid ()
