Failure mode - GM 3.0L Duramax LM2/LZ0 I6 (2020+)

EGR system failures: valve, cooler, wiring (derate-prone)

Reliability tier: verified - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/

Symptoms

Compare with the other causes of the same sign on this engine: loss of power, limp mode or derate (7 causes) · white smoke from the exhaust · losing coolant (2 causes) · def, dpf and regeneration warnings (4 causes)

Root cause

The 3.0L EGR path fails at multiple points: the valve itself, the cooler (internal leak -> coolant loss/white smoke), and the EGR wiring harness (sensor/control faults). NHTSA owners rarely name it: 8 of 1,190 VIN-confirmed diesel complaints mention EGR (the earlier '131' came from a keyword bug matching 'degrees', DATA_FINDINGS F-42) - GM TSB MC-10165111 documents the 3.0L EGR/turbo coolant circuit.

Diagnosis

Fixes

replace the EGR valve (the derate usually lifts once the valve/harness fault clears; wiring-harness faults are splice repair work - no catalog part) ()

replace the EGR cooler when coolant is being lost internally (white smoke, no puddle) ()

Prevalence
