Failure mode - Ford 3.5L EcoBoost Gasoline (F-150, Expedition, Transit, Raptor - 2011-present)

Internal water pump: coolant loss and coolant-into-oil risk

Reliability tier: aggregated - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/

Symptoms

Compare with the other causes of the same sign on this engine: losing coolant (2 causes) · overheating or temperature creeping up (2 causes) · oil leak, oil consumption or rising oil level (3 causes)

Root cause

The 3.5L EcoBoost carries an internal (inside-the-front-cover) water pump; when the pump seal/bearing fails, coolant can escape internally - into the oil pan (lubrication loss) or externally. Because the pump is internal, the repair is labor-heavy, and a missed failure escalates to bearing/cylinder damage. This is the most expensive single wear item on the platform.

Diagnosis

Fixes

water pump replacement (internal, front-cover labor) with fresh coolant and thermostat; oil change immediately if any coolant intrusion is confirmed ()
