Failure mode - Ford 3.5L EcoBoost Gasoline (F-150, Expedition, Transit, Raptor - 2011-present)
PCV / valve-cover oil consumption (2017-2019 build window)
Reliability tier: aggregated - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/
Symptoms
- excessive oil consumption with no visible external leak
- DTCs P0365/P0369 together with oil use
- oil in the charge pipes / intercooler
- oil pan RTV seepage on some builds
Compare with the other causes of the same sign on this engine: oil leak, oil consumption or rising oil level (3 causes)
Root cause
The Gen2 PCV circuit lives in the valve covers; faulty covers pass excessive crankcase vacuum and oil mist (and trip cam-sensor circuit codes). Ford issued a 2017-2019 build-window SSM cluster directing replacement of both valve covers, plus an oil-pan RTV seepage SSM.
Diagnosis
- verify consumption rate (oil level logs over 1k miles) and check for external leaks first
- scan for P0365/P0369 alongside the consumption complaint
- inspect charge pipes/CAC for oil pooling (blown-through mist)
- check the build date against the SSM windows (Kansas City / Dearborn cut-offs in 2018)
Fixes
replace BOTH valve covers (the SSM/TSB direction for the consumption + P0365/P0369 cluster); pan RTV correction where seeping ()
- valve-cover - more than one option: 3.5L EcoBoost Valve Cover (BL3Z-6582-H, other side), 3.5L EcoBoost Valve Cover (DL3Z-6582-C, one side), 3.5L EcoBoost Valve Cover, Gen2 (HL3Z-6582-F), 3.5L EcoBoost Valve Cover Gasket, Gen1 (pair BL3Z-6584-A / DL3Z-6584-B)
- 3.5L EcoBoost Valve Rocker Arm (Ford HL3Z-6564-A, 2017-2020 F-150 / 2018-2019 Expedition-Navigator)
- Engine oil and filter change (service item, all 3.5L EcoBoost applications)
