Failure mode - Duramax 6.6L V8 Turbo Diesel (GM HD, LB7-LMM 2001-2010)

EGR cooler clogging / failure (LB7-LMM)

Reliability tier: aggregated - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/

Symptoms

Compare with the other causes of the same sign on this engine: white smoke from the exhaust (2 causes) · losing coolant (2 causes) · overheating or temperature creeping up

Root cause

The Duramax has carried a cooled EGR system since the LB7 - the OEM catalog lists a serviceable LB7-era cooler (PN 97288793, 2002-2004 6.6L Diesel, catalog-verified 2026-09-28) - and coolers clog with carbon and eventually leak. The LLY's smaller cooling margin is why the heat-era owner stories concentrate there, but cooler health is the first check on heat complaints across all four generations.
