Failure mode - Ford 6.4L Power Stroke
DPF clogging / regeneration problems
Reliability tier: verified - verify before ordering, see /disclosure/
Symptoms
- 'exhaust filter' messages, derate/limp until regen
- failed regens on short trips; hot exhaust smell, fan roaring
- excessive backpressure worsens turbo seal leaks (feedback loop)
Root cause
First-generation DPF on a pickup diesel: soot AND oil-ash load it (turbo seals and ring-wear oil feed it), regens abort on city duty. The sourced history names DPF clogging as secondary to the turbo-seal leak - treat the pair, not the filter alone.
Diagnosis
- soot/ash load PIDs + DTCs (P242F/P2463-family)
- if oil is reaching the exhaust, fix the source before/with the filter
- bake/pulse cleaning vs replacement decision by ash load
Fixes
professional DPF cleaning when substrate intact; fix the oil source (turbo seals, rings) in parallel ()
- dpf-cleaning-service (part category - specific model not chosen)
replacement DPF assembly (keeps the truck legal) ()
- dpf-assembly (part category - specific model not chosen)
DPF delete hardware + tuning where legal for the vehicle's use and jurisdiction (race/off-road only in the US; EPA wording as on the 6.0 records) (delete (off-road / race use only)) - Clean Air Act on-road prohibition; fails emissions inspection
- dpf-delete-kit (part category - specific model not chosen)
